Despair is the conviction (not just the suspicion) that there is no hope of escape from feared futures. It is just as much a temptation as fear or rage, and it is more effective than either at producing distraction and inaction, thereby perpetuating itself. It is the very essence of a miserable life.

To bring it on, dwell on the fears of the moment. Scan the news for disaster and the intimations of doom. This is easy; they’ll usually be on the front or home page. Tell yourself that you are living at a unique moment in history, and that this time, for certain, there is no hope. Ignore the fact that those in every previous decade could also find justifications for such a conviction.

The payoff is not just in unhappiness but also in leisure time. You don’t have to work for a future that does not exist. No need to study, build your skills, save for retirement, plan a career, quit smoking, go to the gym, or make the bed. You can finally ignore all the advice that everyone has been giving you and relax. Retreat into a video game or binge-watch television.

It may not be fun. But it will be easy.
